A man was sentenced to three years in jail with a three-year reprieve after he and an accomplice smuggled more than 90 tons of overseas waste into the country, Shanghai No. 3 Intermediate People's Court announced on Tuesday.

The man, surnamed He, was also fined 300,000 yuan (US$43,432).

He had schemed with Zhu, an agent with a local freight forwarder, to import solid waste, including plastic boxes and polypropylene wrap, the court said. Between March and April last year, they had foreign sellers provide false documents declaring the waste to be recyclable particles via Zhu's company.

The court gave He a lenient sentence because he had confessed and prepaid the fine.

Illegally importing waste can merit up to five years in jail for minor offenses. In serious cases the term can be more than five years.

Zhu was dealt with in a separate case, the court said.
